Why I chose a learner-directed classroom.

I went to a conference about learner directed classrooms that completely changed my perspective on how a classroom could be run. The main idea behind LDC’s is that when students are allowed to work on projects that interest them, their work will reflect that interest and will promote further creative and cognitive growth. Each class that I hold will have at least three stations that the kids can chose from (in addition to the main group project).

Why I chose an environmental approach.

Protecting the earth should be a priority for everyone. I use recycled objects and materials found in nature for this reason, but also because there are things all over- in the house, on the lawn, in the garbage- that can be used to make fun art! Kids can’t drive themselves to the store with all their money to buy traditional art supplies. I want to teach art with materials that are easily accessible to everyone!

 Art is powerful; it’s my coffee and my meditation. Thinking about the options at my fingertips gets me out of bed in the morning and eases my mind when I’m overwhelmed. I know others feel the same way, so I decided to start a kids “summer art camp” to spread the art love!

 I’m focusing on using recycled objects and materials found in nature. I’m also using a learner-directed teaching style with individual stations and a group project to encourage both collective participation and individual growth.
